University prepares 90,000 fans at Memorial Stadium for Garth Brooks concert
LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – The Garth Brooks Stadium Tour arrives in Lincoln. The concert will take place on Saturday, August 14 at 7 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
“We’re thrilled it’s like bringing home an eighth game for Lincoln,” said Garrett Klassy, senior assistant athletic director.
Officials at the University of Nebraska tell 1011 NOW that they expect 90,000 fans to attend the concert. They plan to use both the stadium seats and the field seats.
“Most importantly, we engaged Lincoln-Lancaster County health officials from the start,” Klassy said. “So we could talk about capabilities and health metrics and really it wasn’t just an athletics initiative, it took the whole campus to pull something like that off.”
One of the main determining factors for the university is the economic impact of an act like Brooks.
Calls and internet searches for hotel rooms showed they were captured downtown within hours.
“Usually $ 10 million to $ 15 million in economic development wherever they go,” Klassy said. “It’s really exciting that these hotels, bars and restaurants have been affected by the pandemic that is hitting near us and affecting us all.”
The university also said they are in the process of obtaining the necessary paperwork to sell alcohol at Memorial Stadium for the event and will consider other events like this if all goes well in August.
Tickets go on sale Friday, May 21 at 10 a.m. CDT. The all-inclusive ticket will cost $ 94.95 each. The concert will have round-robin seating with a limit of eight tickets per purchase. There are only 3 ways to buy tickets for the August 14th show:
- Online at ticketmaster.com/garthbrooks
- On the Garth Brooks line at Ticketmaster, 1-877-654-2784
- Via the Ticketmaster app on your phone.
Fans should be aware that there will be no ticket sales at the Ticketmaster box office or outlets on Friday, May 21.
“It’s an exciting day for Nebraska and the city of Lincoln,” said Nebraska athletic director Bill Moos. “For a year, we have thought long and hard about several options to stimulate the local and state economy. The opportunity to partner with Garth Brooks for a show at Memorial Stadium was obvious. This concert will rock Lincoln, kick off a great fall, and benefit the University, the City of Lincoln and the State of Nebraska.
The Garth Brooks Stadium Tour began in March 2019 and has broken attendance records at every stop on the tour, and will have a major economic impact on Lincoln and the surrounding area.
“Nebraska Athletics is proud to bring an event of this magnitude to Memorial Stadium,” said Klassy. “This is a unique opportunity to see one of the most iconic artists of our lives perform in one of America’s most famous venues. There is no doubt that a visit from Garth Brooks Stadium to Memorial Stadium will be a highly coveted ticket and a night to remember in Lincoln.
The University of Nebraska said it continues to work with the Lincoln Lancaster County Department of Health and will follow all local COVID protocols.
