Republican U.S. Senator Ben Sasse is the only finalist in the UF presidential search

U.S. Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Nebraska) has been nominated as the sole candidate to become UF’s 13th president, the university announced Thursday.

The UF Presidential Search Committee, led by Search Committee Chairman and UF Trustee Rahul Patel, unanimously recommended that the senator be considered by the UF Board of Directors as the next president of the UF.

“It’s good for the University of Florida, good for Florida State, and good for the Sasse family,” Patel said in a UF press release.

Sasse will come to campus on Monday, where students and faculty can submit questions ahead of time online and share their thoughts about him after the visit via the UF Presidential Research website, where the event will be also streamed live, according to a press release.

The UF Board of Trustees will interview him again in a live session at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at Emerson Alumni Hall.

Sasse has represented Nebraska as a senator since 2015 and serves on the U.S. Senate’s Finance, Budget, Justice, and Intelligence Committees. He was president of Midland University from 2011-2014 and previously taught at Yale University and the University of Texas.

In the UF presidential search, which began in March, the university contacted more than 700 potential candidates, according to the press release. It culminates with Sasse visiting campus on Monday to meet. He will need to be confirmed by both the UF Board of Directors and the Florida Board of Governors before he can officially replace President Kent Fuchs in the spring semester.

“The University of Florida is the most exciting college in America right now,” Sasse said in the press release. “The caliber of teaching and research at UF is undeniable, carried out under the fundamental principles of shared governance and academic freedom. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work alongside one of the most outstanding faculties in the country.
