KIMBALL, NE – The Kimball community is joining together to help a high school student recover from burns suffered in a recent accident.

Kimball freshman Derek Kauffman was seriously injured in the crash at the school on April 22.

Kauffman was airlifted to Burn Center in Greely, Colorado, and then transferred to Children’s Hospital in Denver.

In a letter to News Channel Nebraska, Sharon Westby, a relative of Derek, says Kauffman will need several skin graft surgeries.

An account has been opened at FirstTier Bank in Kimball for those who would like to donate to his family. The funds will be used to alleviate the cost of round-trip travel from Denver, hotels, food and uncovered medical expenses.
