Five more Apollo and Tech Sports teams could become cooperatives
ST. CLOUD – The St. Cloud area school district is looking to combine several high school sports teams before the next school year.
Under the proposal, the Apollo High School and Tech High School girls’ tennis, boys’ tennis, girls’ softball, boys’ baseball and girls’ basketball teams would all become unique cooperative teams.
Currently, schools have joint teams for gymnastics, wrestling, men’s hockey, women’s hockey, men’s lacrosse and women’s lacrosse.
Deputy Director of Secondary Education Laurie Putnam said the district hopes the cooperative teams will be a temporary solution to reduce the number of participants. She says they are working to rebuild activity programs by providing after-school transportation to the high school level and hiring middle-level activity coordinators to help build a pipeline from the elementary level.
The district is also asking for comments from the public regarding the names and colors of co-op teams. Once completed, the proposal will need to be approved by the Minnesota State High School League.
