Dollar General builds Nebraska’s largest warehouse in Blair
BLAIR, Neb. (WOWT) – There is big economic news for the Omaha metropolitan area. Dollar General is building a distribution center in Blair.
The warehouse will serve more than 1,500 Dollar General stores across the Midwest.
“It’s a big deal, yes, absolutely.”
Construction of an 800,000 square foot warehouse and distribution center is underway south of Blair. Dollar General is building the $ 85 million complex on 85 acres just off Highway 75.
The company says it will employ 400 people and bring $ 106 million to the economy of metro Omaha. But there are some concerns.
“This will be the largest warehouse in the state of Nebraska. The problem with the warehouses is you have trucks and Blair already has a lot of trucks going through Blair because we are not Rome but we are sitting in the valley of five hills. And to do a true bypass of Blair would be three, four miles, and cost hundreds of millions of dollars. “
Three national highways cross Blair and the new warehouse would add hundreds of additional trucks each week to the area. Blair Mayor Richard Hansen said plans are underway to help alleviate some of the problems with heavy trucks.
“We are going to move 950,000 meters of earth to connect Highway 30 to Highway 75, which will bypass some of the traffic.”
Mayor Hansen says there are plans to extend 10th Street south as well.
“And that will connect behind me with Highway 75 and we are in the process of acquiring land.”
The mayor says the addition of more workers and their families to the area shows Blair is growing.
“It’s within city limits, so we’ll get tax benefits from it. Schools will benefit, so other than the advent of more trucks, it’s going to be interesting and it’s going to change Blair’s dynamic forever.
Plans call for the warehouse to be fully operational early next year.
