Body of missing hiker found near Red Lodge
The body of missing hiker Tatum Morell was found this weekend on Whitetail Peak near Red Lodge. Morell, an experienced hiker, had not heard from since July 1. Search began on July 5 and was unsuccessful until climbers found her body on Whitetail Peak, where she had apparently been caught by a large slide and was largely buried under rocks. His body was transported out of the area by Two Bear Air and the Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Helicopter.
Morell had planned to climb five 12,000-foot peaks in the West Fork of Rock Creek, according to Amy Hyfield, public information officer for Red Lodge Fire Rescue. This included the Silver Run, Whitetail, Sundance, Bowback and Castle mountains. She said the area where Morell was found on August 21 had been searched several times, but the size of the landslide mainly covered her body, making it difficult to find.
The size of the search area and the difficulty of the terrain made the search extremely dangerous for rescuers, Hyfield reported. Deputy Chief Jon Trapp of Red Lodge Fire Rescue said in a press release: “After nearly two months of intensive search efforts, we are relieved that she can be returned to her family. to find Tatum have surpassed anything I have seen in my 17 year search and rescue mission. It was absolutely amazing. “
The recovery teams were greeted by Tatum’s family at the Red Lodge airport. The family, along with Red Lodge Fire Rescue and Carbon County Sheriff, thanked all of the agencies and volunteers who helped with the two month search.
